Women Peace and Security Chiefs of Defence Network

United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 established the Women Peace and Security (WPS) agenda on 31 October 2000 which was strengthened by number of subsequently adopted resolutions. This have been a great initiative in improving the quality of life of all, especially for women. Following that, Canada, UK and Bangladesh started the WPS Chiefs of Defence (CHOD) Network. Purpose of the network is to provide a collaborative platform for CHODs who plans to advance the WPS agenda within their defence forces. This network supports their efforts to build internal capacity and expertise. The initiatives of this network is reflected in growing women participation and successes in UN PKO.

WPS CHOD Network have been doing commendable job in championing the cause of women. Successively, on 8 February 2022, Bangladesh Armed Forces took over the Chairmanship of WPS CHOD Network from Canada. It is now a sacred obligation for Bangladesh Armed Forces to carry forward the legacy and advance further. Our firm realization is that, integrating different understanding, experiences and capabilities of women in all aspects of UN peace operations is essential for success. Women participation is proved to be very effective in resolving conflict and bringing peace and harmony within the community. Therefore, we are determined to increase the female participation to fulfil the target set by UN.

However, so far 56 UN CHODs have joined WPS CHOD Network. Many of the member states of this network have already formulated their National Action Plan. It is obvious that the objectives of this network cannot be met until all UN member states join it. We expect all CHODs to come forward and join this network to enable a stronger emergence of this network. We are eager to increase the membership of the network, build on institutionalizing gender perspectives, and increase awareness of the WPS agenda in respective defence forces. Therefore, WPS CHOD Network calls all UN CHODs who have not joined yet to connect to WPS CHOD Network to implement WPS agenda of UNSCR.

I am certain, with our combined efforts, we shall be able to contribute more effectively for the peace in the globe better.
