On August 5, 2022, Second Lieutenant J PEURTO became an officer in the Belize Defence Force gaining her commission at Alabama in the United States of America. It was her dream to pursue a career in Aviation, and her aptitude was unquestionable from the start having topped the pilot screening at Belize Defence Force Airwing.
Her opportunity came on January 8, 2023, when she was sent to Jamaica to pursue her aviation dreams. After one year and eight months, she received her wings and became the first female pilot for the Belize Defence Force.
“I hope that my journey inspires and opens doors for other women who want to venture into this career, proving that, yes, it is possible for women to excel in the military and achieve anything they set their minds to.”
2Lt PEURTO

Force Gender Advisor
As the Force Gender Advisor for the Jamaica Defence Force, I have witnessed firsthand the incredible value that a gender-inclusive and gender-diverse military brings to our mission. Gender diversity enhances our ability to respond to complex security challenges and strengthens our overall resilience. The Women, Peace, and Security agenda is vital in ensuring that women play a meaningful role in defence and security. This agenda empowers our forces to be more responsive to the needs of all citizens, ensuring that we provide security in a way that reflects the values of inclusivity and respect. Gender equality is not just a goal, it is a strategic advantage for any military committed to peace and security
Troop Corporal
I am proud to be the first Caymanian woman to achieve the rank of Corporal, a pivotal step that has motivated me to embrace more leadership roles within the Regiment. While I may be the first to achieve many milestones, I am committed to ensuring that I am not the last. My aspiration is to empower more locals, especially women, to step up and step out joining us in service, breaking barriers and positively contributing to our community.
As I advance in my career, I look forward to contributing to initiatives like the Women in Peace and Security Chiefs of Defence Network, advocating for women’s leadership in military roles, and help drive positive change for future generations.”
Colonel Adjutant Quartermaster - Jamaica Defence Force
The war on gender inequality and gender biases cannot be won without the collaborative effort of both men and women.
Everyone has a part to play in this effort as there is always room for more gender champions in armed forces and in the wider society.
